  1. in general the cliched Qh or paint is okay, but they vary. Arabs tend to be sound but again, cliche and can have some moodiness. I prefer Fjords, but they may be too much personality for some and too stock for your liking. (if you do like them please get a gelding)

If Fjords aren't your thing, I recommend  a mutt. QH horse mutts with arabs are ok. Paints i like slightly more than QH's as they are more unique, attract the judge's eye, and are suitable for most disciplines. Try to stand out, do not get the blandest one, if you need to compete.

Safety is a must. Bottom line, any breed can do any discipline, it is the horse that is sound, calm, and fits you.

  2. I prefer the mellower breeds like Quarter Horses and Paints.  I would suggest finding something between the ages of 8-13, so its got a lot of riding experience, and will be safe.  Make sure you look at something considered "kid safe" which means that you can feel comfortable on the horse, and focus on becoming a better rider, instead of fighting with a horse that has issues.

I'm sure you can find something that was maybe a 4-H horse, so its been to shows, and used for tons of different events.  Otherwise, something that was a lesson horse would be great.  You can look at stuff on www.dreamhorse.com and type in different stuff on their search to get an idea of whats in your area.

  3. Mine would be perfect for you...but she's mine :)

  4. QH is the best breed for all-around showing.  I also like Arabians, they are smaller, but good in all events.

  5. It's not what kind of horse, but the individual horse. Some horses can do all of that, but if you don't have the right connection with the horse, it doesn't matter. You are bound to end up trying plenty of horses, just to find that each one isn't right. Keep looking and talking to people. Somewhere, there is a horse that you are comfortable with that can do everything you are asking. Don't get discouraged because it isn't right under your nose. Also, don't expect to find a horse that can do EVERYTHING you are looking for. If you work with the horse, it will trust you and do whatever you ask.
