  1. My tip is DON'T BUY A DRIVER (YET)

If you don't have set of clubs, here is my full advice on a good "Starter" set...

    Go with a putter, a sand & pitching wedge, and then just use the ODD irons 5, 7 & 9. Forget about the 3, 4, 6, & 8 - you don't need them now. As for woods, I suggest a hybrid (replaces the 3 & 4) a 5 wood and a 3. Ignore your desire for a Driver...

Hit the range as much as you can BEFORE you step on to a course. Practice a smooth, relaxed swing. Don't even think about how far you are hitting it for at least three months of 3X per week on the range.

When at the range, use the higher number irons and wedges more than the lower numbers. Your focus is control, not distance!

AND EVERY time you hit the range - put, put, put! - those days you don't hit the range, put some more.

The driver is the most difficult club to learn to swing.  Not until you can hit a 3 & 5 wood where you want should you use a driver (unless your local course has REALLY, REALLY wide fairways).  The reality is that a wells struck 3 wood by most (non pros) is a great firs shot and will go around 90 of the distance a drive might - but with a higher probability of not flying WAY out of bounds.

As for a Driver - when you are ready, demo as many as you can to find one that feels right, looks right to your eye when addressing the ball, and that you can hit.

  2. Taylor Made Nitro Burner.. once you buy these you will have to come up with another excuse for your handicap..  :-)

    ..

  3. if youre looking for a nice set, consider taylormade, callaway golf, wilson and nike.  The drivers in these brands are awesome especially taylormade sasquatch!

  4. Go to Dicks and try out a few different drivers they offer, they will help you with loft, flex , etc., being a newer golfer I would go with a 12 degree driver allowing you to get the ball up in the air more. Once you find one you like, go to www.rockbottomgolf.com, they offer a variety of last years models at 1/3 the cost. I paid $89 for my Taylormade R5 driver, also bought my iron set from them.

  5. Best tip I can give you is to look at Callaway Preowned.  If you are new you will need good clubs but shouldn't invest too much right away.  I found that as I progressed I wanted something different.  Your swing will change and improve and what works for you now may inhibit you a little later.  That being said, I have struggled with drivers over the years and found the Callaway Big Bertha 460 very forgiving.  Still, it is helpful to go into a shop and demo.  Check out what feels right to you and look at what you are most consistant with.  You can also buy used in the shop.

  6. Go to a golf store and ask the pro to help you, if you are spending a lot of money they usually do this for free.

  7. Since your are new, you probably just want to buy a cheap Wal Mart driver for the time being. You don't want to rush out and buy expensive equipment right off the bat. You may not even like golf after you play a couple of times, so don't spend a lot of money until you know that you're going to want to play this game for good.

  8. Look for the one that best suits u. but most beginners use stiff graphite shafts and not really a huge head on the club. I would suggest a cheaper one for like Wal-Mart and then save to get a nice one once you've become better.

  9. I have only been golfing for 2 yrs now, and i am already on my third set of clubs. I started out with a walmart set then moved on to nice used clubs. Now i have all new taylor made clubs except the driver.  I have talked to a lot of club pro's about this subject. For a beginner you probably dont have the most fundamentaly sound swing but you probably do have very fast clubhead speed.  I was directed to the Nike Sasquatch Sumo 2 Square Driver. It is very forgiving and helps with the slice in your swing.  I am very impressed with this driver and it has helped to lower my handicap and hit more fairways.  By the way if you believe that you have good club head speed try to find a stiff or extra stiff shaft.
