  1. Welcome...

  2. Tell them a little about yourself. Your background in education and where you grew up and why you want to teach their children.  Not a whole lot, but just enough that they can begin to feel some rapport with you. Give them a sentence or two about that you have high expectations for their children etc. Maybe give an email address so that they can contact you.  End with that you share their concerns for their children's education

  3. As a mother of 3 I can tell you what I like to hear in the letters from their new teacher.

    1. Of course we like to know your name

    2. We like to know what town you live in

    3. What you like to do in your spare time

    4. It is always nice to hear what you did over the summer

    5. and what you plan on doing with the kids this school year

    6. Also include anything special you want the kids to bring with them on their first day.. Example.. you would like them to bring in a paragraph or more of what they did over the summer

  4. I used to teach pre-school and the last year in the little kid school was a big deal to children and parents alike. Talking about how you will be preparing their child for the next level of their education is a biggy. It allows the parents to know what to expect from you and kids to know they are capable young people and need to be more independent and responsible for themselves. I am also a mom of a son going into 5th grade and he is a little nervous about being the big guy on campus. So be firm but don't forget to be compassionate.

  5. I work in a school where we advise new teachers not to put "This is my first year teaching" instead they put "This is my first year at Blank Elementary School" or "I am excited to join the faculty of Blank Elementary School this year." Some of our parents do not want first year teachers.  As a parent, I actually prefer them because I like the energy and enthusiasm.

  6. I wish I had my parent handout on my home computer to attach, but it's at school.  I was working on mine today.  I do it in outline form.  (I'm in a private school, also.)  I talk about myself, but I don't put that information in the outline.  Here's what I include:

Info about each subject.  Like, spelling tests are on Friday, etc.

Reminders to be on time, because tardies = more homework.

    My homework policy.

    My discipline policy.

Details the parents wouldn't know like the students can bring water bottles, snacks at recess, etc.

That birthdays are celebrated at lunchtime, not during class time.

How students are to be picked up (it's confusing at our school).

How lunch money is to be turned in, etc.

Talk to some of the other teachers in your building to see what they put in theirs.

Also, you could include some of the things the kids will be learning.  Look through the textbook for the highlights.

  7. there's a lot to write but you might wanna start with welcoming your students and looking forward to a good semester with them its nice to show the parents that their kids are in good hands
