Question:

I am a part time knife maker and want to get large obsidian pieces.?

From what I have heard, obsidian is the ultimate knife making stock to work with; even if that is not true it still looks nice. I tried searching various online stores and can only find small little pieces about 2 inches in size. I need stuff around 9 inches to work with to make a decent knife. Do any of you know an online store that sells larger "chunks" of obsidian like that? Thanks ahead of time.

  1. This site sells it by the pound http://sierramadretraders.com/catalog/de...

and also sells larger blocks of rainbow obsidian http://sierramadretraders.com/catalog/de...

Not sure where else you could try. If there is a university anywhere near where you live with a geology department you could try asking there and they may be able to direct you. I actually have quite a few large samples myself but i'm in the UK so selling them would be impractical.

  2. Have you tried the Rockhounds or rock collectors sites?? or gone to any of the rock collectors stores in your vicinity? They should have access to larger pieces of obsidian.

I only have the little tiny ones my self, about an inch in diameter.
