I know I am teaching 6th grade and from what I've read online its not a traditional middle school. Im pretty sure the periods last 90 minutes (well for math and language arts). I don't know any of the rules and regulations and what i'm generally allowed to do. I don't have a copy of the curriculum and I haven't even seen my classroom. I want to begin to start planning while I have a lot of free time. Should I know more about the school?

  1. I also teach 6th grade ( in CA) and I love it!! The best way to learn the curriculum is to go to the school and go to the person in charge of text books and see if you can check out the Teacher's Edition and whatever supplementary materials they come with. If not check out your State's Dept of Ed. for standards. At least you'll get an idea of what to expect.

As far as the rules of your school, I'm sure you'll get a handbook and some sort of orientation. If not, ask your colleagues. Good luck!

  2. I would first read everything on the school's website available; that will help familiarize you a bit with the culture of the school.  Most schools have an orientation for new teachers, so you'll probably participate in that your first day or two.  You will certainly be given a handbook with procedures and rules, so rest easy!  Look forward to teaching those kids, and it'll be just fine.
