I am considered to be an independent contractor by secretshopper. Pay depends on assignment and I am not reimbursed for gas or expenses.

  1. Make sure to keep accurate records as to your mileage and gas expenses.  Also, make sure to keep all receipts for gas purchases made in conjunction with your business.  You may not, however, deduct gas expenses for personal travel; so make sure your records are accurate here.  Since you are self-employed, you might want to consider hiring an accountant to do your taxes.  This might be a deductible business expense as well, but you should check that out with the IRS.

  2. Yes, mileage is a deductible expense.  Be sure to keep a log as you go of ALL mileage on your vehicle, noting whether the miles are person, commuting or business.

  3. Yes, you can, as well as any other expenses you incur from earning that income.
