  1. of course you can. I've seen lots of people in my crew lower their times from last year by more than a minute. but that might just be because last year was grade 8 and a lot of guys had pretty bad times. Last year I was at 8:16, and this year i'm at 7:30( i know it's not that great but i'm only 130 lbs). Just work on your aerobic stuff with long pieces at low rates, and that will build you to a better middle 1000, where it hurts the most. How well you do depends on how hard you train

  2. well first of all to the other guy. going from a 7:16 to a 6:16 is completely different than going from a 8:15 or something to a 7:30

the watts show it. to keep getting lower splits the watts increase as an exponential value. they are not directly correlated.

but to answer your question. much of this depends on your body size. it might not be nessasary to pull a whole minute lower if your a lightweight. but if you really want it you can definitely achieve it. do the adequate training and always know that you body can push itself father than the mind.

i am almost in the same situation as you i pull like a 7:06 and i am also a soph. i hope i can lower mine but alot too.

my friend was pulling pretty crappy 2ks a year ago and he just broke 6:20 two days ago. btw the stanford coach is trying to recuite him and hes still a junior.

    good luck

oh another tip. do 4k ergs at 2k split + 5 two to three times a week. it will greatly benefit your 2ks

  3. Do some cross training with weights, especially bench row, and step-ups (with weights) or squats. All around weight lifting for balanced musculature, with emphasis on the rowing power muscles.

Don't just row.  Its too much long cardio, and that tends to reduce muscle size, not build it up.  Weights 2-3 times a week, and easy long cardio alternate days.  Throw in occasional intervals to test your rowing power. Once or twice a month skip the weight day and do a heavy interrval erg workout: 500s, 1000s, 2ks.

Eat healthy, and don't over train.  Don't try 2K's for a best time more than 1 day a week.

When you do, be sure to get a good 10-20 minutes of warm-up, including a couple of 30 second and 1 minute hard pieces, with a minute or two rest between. Have 2-3 minutes rest before you hit it, and don't go off so fast you fade throughout. You final 500 should be your best.

For a 6:20 2K, 1:35 for 500m should be very easy for you, since that is the average you need. That means your best 500 time needs to be under 1:30, and repeatable in interval training.

I'm 55, with severe heart disease.  I just knocked 30 seconds off my 2K of a month ago, but I am heart rate limited. I kept my split time at about 18 seconds better the whole way.  A 9:01 does not sound impressive, but a few months ago I thought it was impossible. 9:30 left me almost gasping.

Add strength and maintain excellent cardio using more and more power that you build.  I was an excellent lightweight in college. That was pre-Concept2.

If you get lot stronger, you'll be faster.  Don't train more than 6 days a week, 5 better, and take a week off every 2 months or so for a full recovery from training.
