  1. Hi, I'm in same situation and did some research on that. It IS tricky, no one really knows what's the deal. My student advisor does not recommend it either, but some people have done it and it worked.

Apparently it seems you CAN leave the US and be readmitted while waiting for your EAD card (always, of course, with all other required and valid documents like I-form, valid F1 visa etc.).

See the explanations by duke university and the answer 2.N. of the FAQs by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (US government).

Of course, I am aware that it always depends on the friendliness of the immigration officer - and they seem to have some ethnic bias...

Also, it is not clear what happens in the situation where you leave the country and receive the EAD card while you are away, and then try to re-enter... (technically you would need a job offer AND the physical card at that point...).

  2. Hello,

I have been through the same situation as this before.

I highly advise that you do NOT leave the country without the OPT since they may consider the application abandoned if you leave after completion of your studies.

    Good Luck!

  3. If you leave, USICS will consider that you abandoned your OPT application. So it is advised not to travel outside of US while your OPT is pending. Sorry.
