Question:

I am a student looking to get a violin, but I am on a budget. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I am looking at something between $100 and (at the absolute most) $300. I have been looking at perhaps getting an electric violin, because I am currently in an apartment and it would be handy to be able to practice without having to worry about disturbing my neighbours. Again, any suggestions? Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  2. You can find a decent instrument, with bow and case, at you neighborhood pawn shop. Try them out, remember you can dicker over the price. There may be one shop which has more instruments than the others, call first.

I got my cello for $100, that way. Its only problem is that someone painted it black.

  3. Well, I don't recommend an electric violin.

If you already know how to play, and already have at least one acoustic violin, then you could go with an electric model.

However, if you've never played before, I wouldn't recommend it.  You should learn on an acoustic violin -- otherwise, when you eventually play on one, it will be awkward and strange.

Furthermore, if you ever decide to play with an orchestra, you wouldn't be able to play an electric violin.

Also, you can't get a decent electric violin for one to three hundred dollars -- there are some electric violins in that price range, but nothing good.

I'd recommend you go to your local music store.  Tell them your budget and playing experience, and they'll help you to find something that will suit your needs.

  4. You can get decent quality violins for under $100. I recommend that you avoid the ones on eBay. I would suggest going with a reputable dealer that provides a solid warranty and money back. We have purchased violins from musicalmart.net in the past have had great success with the violins offered there. They start at $49 (with 2 bows and lots of accessories) and have nice German tiger flamed Stradivarius copies for $129. They offer a 30 day no questions asked money back guarantee and a 1 year full warranty on their violins which is a big plus also. I have included 2 links below that lists their violins. I hope this helps.

  5. I used E-bay, and got my 2 violins for $20 each, plus $20 dollar shipping for each.

Don't get ones that are colored. I'm not sure about now, but there were many colored violins out there. Do not buy those. I got one of those, and it's junk. Also, when you assemble your violin, make sure there's cork between the chin-rest and the violin (assuming it's not built in).

  6. Have you looked on eBay?  I got a new 4/4 student violin with 2 bows for under $50 from them.
