  2. In Detroit it is a great tradition. Back in the 1950s, it took 8 wins to win the cup. 8 legs for 8 wins, it is a symbol of victory in Detroit

  5. Its not the fans who throw it ont he ice it is a specific faculty of the Red Wings.... this goes back to a tradition established long ago when I do believe teh playoffs were best out of eight....

    Plus it make a stiny rink....

  6. It's Been a tradition for a long time for Detroit!! even though octupus doesn't have to do anything with Detroit!! and now if u throw an octupus on the ice u have  to pay 10,000 dollers!!

  7. it only happens in Detroit or cities that Detroit is playing and is done for luck and tradition. The eight legs of the octopus represent the eight wins it took to win the cup, some believe that if an opposing player touches the octopus or picks it up off the ice then that team will loose the game. refer to the Nashville series, one of their players tossed the octopus off the ice in the direction of the wings bench and they were easily swept by the wings.

The eight legs were purportedly symbolic of the eight wins it took to win the Stanley Cup at the time. The Red Wings went on to sweep both of their opponents that year en route to a Stanley Cup championship and it's been good luck ever since.
