Can you give me some advice on what kind of activities I can do with the kids. Pre-k and kindergarten.

  1. For warm up activity... maybe have them listen to some blues similar to what they will be hearing at the performance. Have them sit and listen to a short (1 min) excerpt. Then ask for what the music made them feel (any answer is a correct answer). Then have them listen to a longer excerpt of the same song while they move around the room according to what they hear in the music (slow, fast, sad, happy, etc). Then tell them about the upcoming performance they will hear. Go over some "rules" like sitting still, having good listening ears, not talking to their neighbors, clapping at the end of the song, etc.

For a post activity... it depends on when you will see them after the performance. If you see them the same day then  you can recall the performance and ask them thought questions about it. What song did you like? Why? What was your favorite instrument? Describe it (if they don't know the name). How did the song make you feel? etc. If you're not going to see them for awhile then you will have to refresh their memories... and some won't be able to recall it. See if you can get a recording of any of the songs that were played. Play the song, see if they remember it. Then go over some questions listed above or repeat the warm up activities.

If you really want to, you could even add in some information about blues music. Maybe why you are talking about how you feel when you listen to it. Maybe show some pictures of famous blues musicians.

Hope that helps! Good luck with  your student teaching!
