  1. start by explorng this site. www.nichcy.org and www.disabilityinfo.gov and see cure autism now or autismpeaks.org see the north carolina ABA therapy info site as well.

my child has severe autism. she is now an adult.

  2. Since each child with autism is very different (and I'm not sure how old your student is), so I'll try my best to make some general recommendations. You may want to try them and see which ones work best for your student. Thanks for asking this question; students with autism need more caring teachers like you!

About the physical setting/environment, the TEACCH program - http://www.teacch.com/ - has some great ideas for this. Here are some other websites that give great examples of this "structured teaching" approach:

  4. Does this child have an IEP plan? If so, What is written in it to teach the child?

The whole IEP team is suppose to discuss and decide on these things together. It is illegal for just one person to make these decisions.

What ever is agreed on has to be written into the IEP plan or it does not have to be done.

The school has to give parent 'prior written notice' on anything they agree or disagree to do.

  5. Someplace that's isn't loud or too crowded.

My sister has autism and seems to get agitated when in areas where lots of people are and there is a lot of noise.

  6. You don`t say if the student is high functioning or low functioning. Most autistics have sound sensitivity.A quiet place, without visual distractions. All of the kids have something they need that comforts them,at least the low functioning ones do.What ever the parent uses to calm them, when they get to overwhelmd. My son doesn`t like small rooms with no windows. They can be sensitive to perfume, certain noises.
