I know that nurses have to take anatomy but in the class they use a dead cat it's worth a lot of your grade because you work on it once a week. (a lot of people in my family are in the medical field and told me that) Most of the cats are really skinny though and were taken off the street and were hungrey. Should I look at it that way.

By the way I'm only 15 but I know I could change my mind about nursing but I always was thinking about careers in the medical field since I was little.

  1. Look at it this way the cat was put down because no one wanted him. He would of been put down anyway. I've done it and things even grosser, but its part of my education. I'm not looking forward to cadaver dissection, atleast they are volunteers.

BTW: since your In a medical major you can't take an alternative to dissection.

  2. A lot of the cats are really sicky and hungrey that they take for those

  3. This is a difficult decision and it is one that you need to make for yourself.

Many people look at the long-term benefits. (You'll be able to help people better if you do it.) Keep in mind that even vetrinarians take part in vivisection.

  4. i live in IL and here there is a law where if you dont want to dissect they have to give you a different assignment, like a long paper or something. im taking bio next year and we dissect to and i checked that out and its my understanding that they have to let you do something else if you want.

i dont know where you live but i would check it out.

im sure if you just talk to the teacher they would be fine with you not taking part and giving you something else, if not then you could show them legally you dont have to(if there is that law in your state)

these states all have laws for alternatives to dissecting:California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

  5. What a coincidence. My wife is a vegetarian and is studying to be a nurse as well. She loved anatomy, and her dissection skills were the best in her class. She got a cat that was pregnant when it died. She had no problems with it at all.

You should look at it that way. You should never forget that you're dealing with living things, or things that were once alive.

What's the point in being a nurse if you don't care about suffering?

  6. I met many strict Vegan Buddhist nuns who are excellent nurses; one can draw blood out of a crying boy with 1 hand; while the other hand to cover his eyes.

Open to the concept; being a vegan doesn't make you any weaker than meat eaters; just watch after your balanced diet.

Nursing is a very noble career; requiring care and warm hearted besides being alert.

    Best wishes!
