  1. If it is running slow, open some of the hot water faucets in the highest part of the house to let air in.  That is if you turned the cold water off at the top (inlet) of the heater.

  2. The water is shut off going into the water heater, so when you connect the hose and open the drain valve not much comes out as it is a sealed system.  Open a hot water valve in the bathroom sink or bathtub or something like that and it should start draining.    I struggled with that for awhile before figuring it out.

  3. I've got to agree with Isabella.  There's nothing in the Y chromosome that enables plumbing (well, maybe that butt crack thing).   Nobody is born knowing this stuff, you have to learn it.

But your answer is -- there should be a valve there, right where the hose is attached.  Turn it on after turning off the feed line at the top.

  4. Siphon. To get it started you need to draw, like using a straw. But be careful.  A shop vac would work

  5. There is a valve on your water heater.  It is usually on the bottom of the water heater--turn it to the left.

Also, there is a different kind of valve about halfway up your water heater, this one, you pull up and you should hear water hissing out almost immediately.

Failing all our help, google works, so does talking to the nice LADIES and gentlemen at Home Depot or Ace Hardware.

I am female and in no way do I think that water heaters are a mans job.  ROOFING may be a mans job.

REPLACING the water heater may be a mans job, since they weigh so much, but basic home maintenance is NOT MANS WORK.

    Good luck.

  6. THIS IS NOT A MAN'S JOB! THIS IS A SKILLED OR QUALIFIED PERSON'S JOB.  Thanks for setting women back 50 years!

  7. There should be a valve near the bottom of the tank, if nothing comes out when you open it you can insert a wire (like a coat hanger straightened out) into the valve and fish around to break up the crystallized hard water deposits so it can drain.
