I was wondering if when being introduced is it considered appropropriate to shake hands as it is in the States?

  1. A female Westener should not extend her hand to be shaken by a Gulf male unless she is content that no embarrasment will ensue: it is possible that a fervent Muslim will refuse her hand, almost certainly politely apologising for being unable to do so.

A good rule is: same s*x - definitely shake hands, even embrace; different s*x - do not even shake hands, hold back.

If an Emirati male offers you a handshake, please go by Reem's answer.

Talking about Western woman being introduced to an Emirati male. Other Nationalities - other rules.

    Take care.

  2. Dear, here in Abu Dhabi, you can do the same. It is not a mistake or problem to introduce yourself with shakehands...

Most of the arab people are western educated, and they know the custom of there.

Also, once a person (as said stranger) offers his hands, dont hesitate to shake it... Also, you may do the same...

It's up to you only... and not a matter of men / women!

    Thx

  3. Yes it's not uncommon for men and women to shake hands in this country.  It's probably not done by the more conservative Muslims.

  4. Actually it is not between men and women, but if the man offers his hand first, go ahead and shake it, but lightly and quickly. Some people are used to Western hand shaking and don't mind, but some will not be so quick to shake a strange woman's hand (strange meaning non-relative.) Between women, it should be okay.
