  1. i hope the trip is necessary. Being a new driver, i'd suggest taking someone along with you--like an experienced driver. I would further suggest you keep it under 60 mph, as this will increase your gas mileage significantly, thus saving you in gas money. And make sure your car is road worthy--get a tune up before you go. Drive safely--and good luck.

  2. Dont be nervous!

Make sure you have a full tank of gas and your horn works.

Get out on the interstate and floor it. Drive it like you stole it!. If a cop tries to pull you over, RUN. That is why you need a full tank of gas. If someone cuts you off, honk your horn and give them the finger.

That is how I do it.

  3. Buy a tank and carry a gun and you might stand a chance.

  4. 1.  keep your eyes focused down the road

    2.  try to keep up with traffic

    3.  When you go around someone give them plenty of room

    4.  Don't be wise ***

    5.  Respect, respect respect others and yourself

  5. I-480 and I-77 have some road construction going on. 77 isn't that bad, but 480 is all crazy. Lol.

Don't go in the morning from 6:30- 8:30am or 4:30-6:30pm on weekdays. Traffic is CRAZY on both, at those times. I once tried taking 77 home from work and was stuck in traffic for 45 minutes, that would normally take me 15 minutes with moderate traffic.

If you take I-480, the Ridge Road and State Road exits both have cheap gas. Right now it is $3.54.

  6. I remember my first time driving on an interstate.  What a rush!      Please, don't think of me as an old fuddyduddy, but these well known basics are absolutely imperative.  I bet YOU could write a whole book about each one, but I will only ask you to keep them in mind whenever you drive:

    (1) An open road doesn't mean open up!  (2) Most fatalities occur within the first two years of getting a driver license.

    (3) Do not drink alcohol and then drive.  (4) Drive defensively and Stay alert.

  7. First of all, I congratulate you on your choose of destination! Cleveland is a great city, and I highly suggest you catch a ball game when you're there, even if my beloved Indians aren't playing so well.

The highway system from Knoxville to Cleveland is pretty simple. I'm not sure how close you live to I-75, but it's a pretty huge interstate that runs from the West Coast of Florida up through Atlanta, Knoxville, Lexington, Cincinnati, Toledo, Detroit, and up to Canada. You'll take I-75 to Cincinnati and most likely hop on I-71 which will take you straight through Columbus to downtown Cleveland. Make sure you mapquest/Expedia driving directions and familiarize yourselves with them before you leave.

When driving North, the biggest thing you want to worry about is driving through the big cities. Try to time your drive appropriately to avoid hitting these cities during rush hour (7-9am-ish and 4:30-6:30ish). Also, with rising gas prices these days, make sure you fill up on gas about 30 miles before you hit a city if you can, because in the city gas will be about $0.75/gallon more expensive.

As long as you pay attention in the long stretches of mindless highway that are prevalent in KY and OH, you should be okay. If you start to feel tired, pull over and grab some food and a caffeinated (sp?) drink. Also, if you have Verizon like me, driving through the hills of KY will render your phone completely useless, so don't schedule any calls while your driving because you won't have service. It would probably be a bad idea to be talking on the phone while driving anyway. Good thing I don't do that...

    Good luck!

  8. BEFORE you start

    - Know where you are going.

    - Know what roads you are going to travel . Pick out an alternate route, if possible.

    ON THE ROAD

    - Make sure your cell phone is fully charged, but leave it off while driving.

    - Check in with a family member or friend at stops along the way - let them know that you're ok.

    - If you feel tired, pull off the road to a gas station or truck stop, get out and stretch or even take a little nap

    - Only drive during daylight hours

    - At about 500 miles, you're looking at a minimum of an 8 hour jaunt . If you can, make it a 2-day trip . That way, you can stop at your leisure and enjoy the experience.

    - Plan on getting a bite to eat and taking on fuel at lunchtime.

    - If you have a CD player, make sure that the cd's you want to listen to are ready to change without fumbling around for them . Put them away when you stop

    - Take a lite snack with you and a couple bottles of water.

    - Make sure that your vehicle is serviced and in good mechanical shape.

    Have a great time.

  9. When you see a sign that reads "Clean restrooms ahead" you don't have stop and clean them.

Just kidding. I think interstate driving is easier but you still need to be alert especially if it has hills. There are not suppose to be hills on interstates but some have them and when you come over a hill be alert that the cars in front of you are not stopped. Maintain a steady speed. There's sometimes minimum speeds posted and of course speed limits. You should be fine.

  10. Stay in the right lane.  That's the slow lane.  You don't have to do the max, but at least the minimum.  Once you are comfortable, you'll begin to pass other people.  Take your time and good luck...
