My oath ceremony is in about a week. right after the oath ceremony I will go directly to obtain my passport, and as soon as I get it, I will leave the country for about a year to work in canada with a work permit. I also want to become a canadian resident since my girlfriend is canadian. we want to live in calgary. Will my decision affect my us citizenship. if not will I have any type of problem? Can a person leave the country right after the oath ceremony and after obtaining a us passport? what if the person doesnt know when to return to the US will there be any problem when entering the US.? . thank you for your answer.

  1. I dont think there will be any problem with that. Once you became a citizen, you can go outside the country and stay out as long as you want.

You still have to pay your taxes though.

  2. re taxes:  both Canadian and US citizens have to pay taxes on their world wide income.  You usually pay taxes to the country where you earned the income.  Sometimes, expatriates also have to pay taxes to their home country, but there often are treaties and agreements in place so that they do not have to pay taxes to both countries on the same income.  It is worth seeing an accountant familiar with both US and Canadian tax laws when filing a return (by April 15 in the US and April 30 in Canada).

The tax rules can be complex, but usually you don't have to pay taxes to the home country after you have been away for a while.  I may be wrong, but I think the US still taxes expatriates if they have a high income.

  3. U.S. citizens can live outside the country forever.

You didn't know: U.S. citizens are taxed on their worldwide income!!!

  4. Sooo why are you becoming a USA citizen in the first place if you dont plan to stay. I hope it affects you citizenship status.

  5. Congratulations!

You will be a citizen unless you renounce it, or unless you committed fraud to get it or commit a super heinous crime (only has happened a few times.)

    Leaving doesn't take it away.
