  1. The fact you are scared is a good thing--- it breeds caution.

You have been in two accidents, but don't state if any injuries.  Inattentive or reckless driving can not only cause accidents but severe injuries and death.  You need to recognize this and keep it in mind.   Drive responsibly,  drive with maturity,  drive alert to all that is happening around you.

By the same token,  you can be killed walking across the street as well.   Just as you should look both ways,  when driving look all ways.    Be cautious,   be careful,  but not terrified so you freeze up or panic.

  2. The best way to find comfort in driving alone, is learning to use your mirrors.

They are your friends and you will find a great convenience in freeway driving once you learn to use them well and get comfortable with speed.

  3. "Get to know the car you are driving.

Go to an empty parking lot. then just go nuts.

Go really fast and slam on the breaks, this is good to see how fast you will stop if you REALLY need to.

Do other things like how fast you can go and turn at the same time, left and right.

Try driving backwards and making turns. get used to the way the vehicle handles."

Now, I'd like to make some additions to this.  Make sure you pick a parking lot without any light poles;  I learned that the hard way.  You don't have to see how fast you can turn at a high speed.  Just start at a slower speed on the normal slower roadways until you get comfortable to going the speed limit.  Getting used to the brakes at different speeds while driving in the empty parking lot should make you feel better about how your car will perform on the road.

  4. Don't get behind the wheel until you are ready.  To make yourself at ease, try riding passenger and be aware of the road as if you were driving.  It would be good practice to start looking in all directions, practice signaling turns in your head, imagine breaking at appropriate times and such.  Other than that, just remember that fear actually makes problems but poise and patience prevents them.  So in other words, purposely drive meticulous and safe!

    The best of luck!
