I am almost 40 and mother of 3 teens. I would like to do phd in US which is halfway round the world. I need an overseas PhD to better my chances of employment in my own country. The course will take 4-5 years but I understand a phD course is flexible about residency. I really want to do this but is it advisable for me to go? Will my kids hate me in future and remember me as an absent mother? Will my kids growing up years be affected? I have never left them and my hubby before although I've always been a working mother. I worry that if i wait until they are in adulthood, i'll be too old.

  1. Every try on-line course?

  2. Try an online program.  Most colleges have them.  Why go to the US?  The colleges in your counrty should have a program too.  I personly would not leave my kids.

  3. If you get the PhD and get a better job, you'll be better able to put your children through college.  Look into University of Phoenix, they have online PhD curriculum and are legit.

  4. Barack Obama's mom did just that, she went to Indonesia to do thesis work for her PhD. And he turned out fine, I would say, and he remembers his mom with much affection.

Then again, his dad did the same thing when he was younger and his legacy is somewhat that of a deadbeat.

  5. If you're from the Philippines, our company, International Education Specialists can definitely help you. Anyway, I would like to suggest for you to check out the New Zealand immigration website.  They have this program for students who are planning to take PhD. It offers a package where you can bring your family with you.

  6. talk to your kids and see what they say. you will be missing out a lot on their lives, which will affect them in the future, as well as your husband.
