  1. a) Listen to National Public Radio and BBC podcasts. I recommend:

BBC: "Thinking Allowed" and "From Our Own Correspondent"

APM: "Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac", "The News from Lake Wobegon", and "This American Life"

NPR: "StoryCorps", "Morning Edition", "All Things Considered", "Fresh Air"

PRI: "Studio 360" and "Afropop Worldwide"

    b) Read thoughtful magazines like Harper's, The New Yorker, and the Economist.

  2. For one, you could "practice up" on your spelling!

And for being already smart & just wanting to "get smarter".... such is life & why we journey it!!!

    1) Be open to the advise of others. Don't think your way is always the best way.

    2) Read.... about everything. My advise is to stay away from fiction. If you are pursuing "brain knowledge", then non-fiction is the way to go!

Above all, listening is more beneficial than talking! Keep a journal of all the important ideas you run across & never give up on your dreams!!

  3. read read read!! and dont read easy books. read book with lots of vocabulary!! like adult books

me, i read alot of books. and that increase my writing and vocabulary skills :D (not tryin to brag or anythin)

  4. try reading very very hard books, and writing essays on them. sylvan helps too!!

  5. As someone already said:  Read read read read read read read!   However, if we knew the subject you were in we could guide you even further.

General pointers:   for speech practice, write out your speech in an essay first and revise revise revise...

Isolate the main points of your essay and turn them into something you can deliver out loud.   Practice your speech over and over and over again.  Rope a friend, parent anyone and as many as you can, into listening to your speech.  As an audience, they'll be able to critique your speech.

Writitng:  you only get better by practicing, practicing, practicing.  The more you read and write, the better a writer you become.  It is a life-long process.  Even career scholars have their work edited, revised, and criticized by their colleagues and peers.  I'm sure we'd be happy to help you revise your writing.

If you let me know what the subject of the course is, perhaps I will be able to help you discover resources that will give you an edge in the class.
