In his first season Michael Jordan averaged 28.2 points, 6.2 assists, and 5.9 rebounds. He had no other all stars on his team and he lead them to a 38-44 record. These are the numbers kobe was putting up in his two seasons before this one where many were naming him the mvp over Nash and Nowitzki. Kobe and Mj both lost in the first round. Does this mean that a rookie Mj was as good as a seasoned Kobe?

Keep in mind that I am a lakers fan who believes Mj was the best ever adn Kobe is the best today for now.

  1. Michael Jordan is the most complete basketball player ever, no weaknesses...

  2. Dude....interesting stat.  You make a good claim.  Nice point bro.

  3. I saw air Jordan pick his nose in a game!

  4. yes i know michael jordan can lead the tema without any great players on the team

  5. As a big Lakers fan i can careless

about MJ or the stats MJ has.

Why do ppl even care about this

c**p.MJ nolonger plays in the NBA.

Kobe is the best player in the NBA .

MJ is now a bad GM on a bad team.

  6. Yes.  You have to also remember that most kids today never seen MJ played.  MJ was impressive from his rookie season.  He was even more impressive in the first few years before Pippen joined.  To me the biggest difference between MJ and Kobe is that MJ was Mr. Clutch.  He made shot when his team need him the most.  He was unstoppable even when everyone know he was going to take the shot.

MJ held 10 scoring titles.  He held many records but the 10 scoring titles is very impressive.  We saw Kobe did it twice and it'll be hard for Kobe to do it again with LJ.

  7. No. I don't know how MJ made the playoffs in his early years, the Bulls had some really bad records. Even his coaches said it, MJ was a ballhog early in his career and could always be one. Kobe was never supposed to be this good, he was just coming out of highschool and was supposed to be an OK player but not great. MJ had a losing record and lost in the playoffs with those stats, but Kobe's teams were bad too, and had to play the Suns, who were not as good as the Celtics, but still better than the Lakers. Kobe is not retired yet so you can't compare them yet. If you look at the stats and see that MJ has over 30,000 points and Kobe only has about 21,000, it's because he hasn't played as long, so you can't compare them. MJ only had those stats as a rookie because he was a ball-hog, not my opinion, it's what his coaches said. I know that his stats got better and the Bulls started winning, but that was when they got Phil Jackson and Scottie Pippen. Those two guys turned the Bulls around while MJ was worrying about getting his stats. MJ is not the best ever, many players are better than him. If you wanna talk about stats, if Wilt, championships, Russel, team play, Magic, defense, probably Russel again, but even Joe Dumars was a better defender than MJ. I don't dislike MJ, but he isn't the best in my opinion.

  8. Well there were different circumstances to how each entered the league. Kobe was a high school player that still needed to develop his body to withstand the physicality of the game. And Jordan was a seasoned college pro. Also the Bulls were a bad team and Jordan was the main player. However Kobe was came to a pretty good Lakers team in fact he wasn't a starter in his first some years. So I think a rookie Jordan was betterthan a rookie Kobe but a seasoned Jordan is better than a veteran Kobe.

Addition: But wouldn't a rookie Jordan (who some consider selfish) have had the same issues that Kobe had when he had those playoff series against the Suns where he tried to do it all and had teammates he couldn't trust. In the same position however a veteran Jordan would've been able to win those series. Jordan started winning when he became a team player

  9. Kobe's assist numbers is lower, but his scoring and rebounding is about the same.  I'm also a Lakers fan and I agree Jordan is greatest and Kobe is the best now.  I wish people would stop comparing player to Legends that will never be replaced (Jordan, Kareem, Wilt, Bird, Oscar)

How about Oscar Robertson averaging nearly a triple double his first five years. His career average: 25.7 ppg, 7.5 rpg, and 9.5 asp.  Jordan's numbers 30.1 ppg, 6.2 rebounds, 5.3 apg.

  10. Well, you have to take in certain details:

    1. Times have changed. There are alot of different types of opponents that KOBE has to go up against that MJ might not have had to, and vice verse. ex. A tall lanky 7'0 Dirk Nowitzki that can shoot pretty much anywhere around the court... MJ did not have to compete against that. (Although Kobe did drop 61 on Dallas in one game haha) That is just an example. Seems to me that there is alot more all around competition now, than there was back when MJ was still on the court.

    2. MJ played in the Eastern conference... We all know that with an exception of a couple teams, that the East has been "not so good" for a while (Atlanta got a spot in the playoffs with a 37-45 record....). I mean just look at the West where Kobe has to play now... It is ruthless.

    3. We all know that for a while Kobe did not like to pass the ball (I don't blame him though). While MJ on the other hand learned fast to incorporate his teammates, and look where it got him. So I think that the rookie MJ learned and was alot more open to ideas than what a seasoned Kobe is.

    4. Kobe came from high school, as to where MJ already had a little exp. from ollege ball, so Kobe had to learn and develope into the player he is today.

  11. did you also know that in 86-87 where he avg 37 points a game the bulls were 40-42.

in the 40 games they won jordan avg 41 ppg while shooting 53% from the field.
