Question:

I am an Art/Bio double major. Should I continue with these degrees or switch to art education?

I'm going into my junior year in college. Right now, I still am not 100% sure of what I want to do. Right now, I'm pre-physical therapy. I've thought about OT, illustration, and graphic design. I've always thought working for a zoo or museum creating posters, pamphlets and such would be great! Any insight?

Anyway, I was considering switching to art ed, but I would be in school for at least another semester. My concern is, however, the pay isn't very good, I haven't taken a single education class and it's hard to find a job. I enjoy working with kids. I really like to see their eyes light up when they "get it." I work with kids all the time at horse camps and I've worked at other camps (various sports, art, etc). I can get frustrated with the trouble makers, but I figure that's normal for any teacher.

What would you do?

  1. Hi,

have you considered medical illustration? The field combines art, biology (particularly huamn anatomy), and graphic design. Also, you can get hired by a firm (so you would have a steady nine to five job), but it's also possible to do it freelance (where you would earn more direct profits). Additionally, it seems like a fairly stable and well-paying career path from what I have researched (more well paying than working with kids!).

You would be creating things like layouts illustration, or could do animation (or all 3). It requires a two year master's degree if you live in the US or Canada that requires a portfolio and some bio prerequisites.
