I'm 21 and have already several decent credits on IMDB, interested in joining the Coastgaurd or possibly the Navy, is there a way to put my acting background to good use in the military? And what kind of job would be best for me if I choose to work part time in the military and pursue acting the rest of the time?

  1. acting will not do you any good in the military.  acting means nothing.

  2. I would try to get into Public Affairs or the like if it is something that you enjoy. It will allow you to get a "fall back" career while still being in the mass communication field that you are used to. Good luck!

  3. If you have a college degree you could try to become an officer.  Then you could act a like a leader.  (Leadership is theater - trust me.)

As an enlisted you could get a job as a broadcast journalist.

  4. linguist would be the best job for you then

  5. you would have to be in the reserves in order for the military to be part time, and then you dont have really  a totally set career either, but still can deploy like everyone else... otherwise you will be full time and proabably wont be stationed anywhere near where you can get actin jobs

  6. The needs of the military come first reguardless of your background, experience or reasons to serve.  Your acting experience won't be of much interest to any branch of the service.  Your body, smile, personality will be of interest to all men.  You should tell your recruiter will note what you're interested in doing but as I said above, the needs of the military come first which means you may want to become a supply sailor (for instance) but you're trained in weather reporting.

Part time?  That means enlisting in the Coast Guard Reserve; duty one weekend per month and two weeks in the summer.  Regardless of whether you go into the regular Coast Guard or the Coast Guard Reserve, you still have to complete the initial 4 month (plus or minus) active duty training.  Could you shoot someone?  The Coast Guard now have missions in which the Coast Guard sailors are armed and have the power to arrest.  You could be trained for that and you can't suddenly become a consciencous objector when you're ordered to weapons training.  However, being given that duty is very remote.

  7. military is full time

acting wont do you any good in the service

  8. Maybe in the Army but not in the Navy or Coast Guard.

  9. Sounds like (for some reason) you want to 'join' the military so you can claim to be a patriot or something?  If you join up, you do so in order to help the country, not further your acting career.

I'd skip it if I were you, this isn't a chance for a photo shoot, it involves a whole other kind of shooting.

  10. Acting won't do you any good in the military

  11. The military is not a part time job.  It is 24x7.  If you joined and were stationed somewhere where there was a theatre company or a tv station, you would be welcome to work with them, as long as it did not interfere with your military career.  Your acting would be secondary and only if you have time.  Also, nothing guarantees that you would stay in NY.  You may end up in the middle of nowhere at a Naval Station.

Now, the AF does have "Tops in Blue" which is a performance troupe made up of performers from the Air Force.  They must audition, be able to sing and dance, or play an instrument.  Then they must get permission to be released from their career for 1 year.  At the end of that year they go back to their regular AF job.

You need to choose... do you want to join the military or do you want to pursue your acting career.  One or the other.
