it is popular thinking that being an artist is more of a hooby or something u study on the side, but i cant imagine myself doing anything else, many want me to study something different like medicine(mother) since im a straight A's student many have even mention me studying art a waste of potential, i feel my poptential is doing art, if ive ever been happy it is when there is a pencil on my hand and paper to use. there also the thing that people say you cant make a decent living out of being an artist...what should i do? i dont even know what specific career i want to pursuit...

  1. go for wat your heart/gut tells you, if it feels right go get it cause only you can make your own happieness

  2. When it comes done to it. Just do what makes you happy. I think that is the most important thing.

  3. i'm an artist and have made a living with my art, but no longer do. the reason being because i love to draw and to paint, i was a designer for car graphics and designed tattoos for friends as well.....at first it was great, then it got to be a JOB and not something i wanted to do. i finished what i had to and quit taking requests, then i quit drawing for almost a year because i took something i loved to do and turned it into something i had to do.

you may or may not feel that...don't go by my experience...but you're a creative person (all artists are) when you go to school use that creativity. major in art with a minor in writing....that opens a lot of doors....comic book writer/designer.....newspaper graphics/layout....book writer/illustrastor  (from children's to adult).....magazine layout/editor.....anything that has print or pictures, even your favorite magazine that you read....they all have a basic layout that is sketched out before any work is done, not to mention if you work for a magazine there might be some travel involved.

you could even think about art and photography as your major and minor...that opens a lot of doors as well.

my point is....don't think that just because you're an artist you have to draw or paint to make money...people pay for your creativity, for the color interpretation an artist has and when people say you can't make a decent living at being an artist tell them....every magazine, every illustrated book, every newspaper and yes, even those sunday comics were created by an artist. i think Jim Davis has done well for himself.

being an artist isn't just drawing.....it's creating

don't be specific...thats when you feel trapped....pick a career that will be broad.

    i hope this helps

  4. I think it's really pretty tough to do. I guess the best thing really if you want to be creative is to get your bachelor's in fine arts, then a master's in fine arts. Major in the medium you like. Pencil in hand? You can major in drawing, or painting, or printmaking, or multimedia, or sculpture. Or now, even video...

If you get an MFA, you can at least fall back on teaching art at a college and you have enough flexibility to do your own art. You have an income, but its not big bucks. Some famous artists, look up Roy Lichtenstein, taught art. I think Philip Pearlstein did too and Hans Hoffman... Others didn't finish art school- Keith Haring, Georgia O'Keeffe, Picasso, Dali was kicked out of art school.

So, there's one question to start with- to go to art school or not? Yeah, following your heart is great, go for it, but you aren't guaranteed any big money.
