I am an elderly shut in and rely on TV to keep me informed but are they intentionally trying to frighten me?

It is scaring me to death. Wolf Blitzer and the girls are spreading so much hate and rumor that I am afraid.

I work for the media...

At our station at least we try to have a balanced approach to news, unfortunately its if there are house fires, murders, stabbings, accidents, etc those always bump and 'good news' stories we might otherwise have.  Thats just how news works.

I'm not in the states so I don't know anything about Wolf Blitzer or what he does.  If you want a more balanced approach to news, start looking on the internet.  For generally odd news from around the world go to http://www.fark.com/

for general world news from a variety of categories (including a customizable local section, go to http://www.google.com/news

and also http://news.bbc.co.uk/ is very good for browsing top stories around the world.

No they are not intentionally trying to frighten you, however many stations such as Fox, have a bias.  And of course, bad news sells more than the good stuff.

Keep yourself updated on the web, as well as on TV it will be a more balanced approach.

They use Fear too control people into doing things like Giving our rights away.

Unfortunately yes.  They are trying to scare you.  The news (as you probably noticed) shows a lot of bad things and not many good.  This is mostly to keep you hooked.  Fear sells.
