  1. I found this on the website expatfocus.com:

"The nationals of many other western countries do not need a visa to enter Ireland (see the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs for list of countries), but all non-European Economic Area nationals require an employment permit if they wish to work in Ireland. UK nationals born in Great Britain or Northern Ireland do not require a passport to enter the Republic of Ireland.

European Economic Area country nationals (EU countries plus Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) have the right to live and work in Ireland without restriction. However, all non-British nationals intending to live in Ireland are required to obtain a residence permit, by registering with the immigration office in Dublin or the local Garda station in other areas, within three months of arrival in the country. To obtain a residence permit proof of employment or self-employment is required, and marriage and birth certificates must be shown for dependents. A residence permit is granted for five years and is renewable."

"In order to work in Ireland non-EEA nationals must obtain an employment permit. There are currently two categories of permit:

    1) Work Permits - issued by the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment to the employer, if it can be demonstrated that every effort has been made to find a suitable EEA national to fill the post before applying for a work permit. Work permits are not transferable; they are valid for one year and are renewable annually.

    2) Employment visas/authorizations - these are issued on a fast-track basis to professionals with skills that are in high demand in Ireland, currently health, construction and IT. People in these groups can apply direct to the Irish Embassy or Consulate in their home countries, and are exempt from the normal work permit application procedures."
