We recently did tie-dye with my children and their cousins.  Ages 18 months through 13 years and everyone had a blast.  You can get a "no mess" tie-dye kit from local craft stores (Michaels, etc.) or Wal-Mart.  We did ours outside because they aren't really "no mess"  Use any light colored cotton shirts they have.  Works great to make a stained shirt useful again and they all love wearing their own creations.  You can also tie-dye other cotton items, socks, scrunchies, elastic waste shorts, etc... Wear old clothes while you work as they will get stained.  Afterwards play in the hose, sprinklers, etc... to rinse off.
