and I will have to accompany her to the toilet. I have no problem with this but I cannot seem to find any information online as to whether or not she might be fully toilet trained by this aged, and whether or not she will need me to help with wiping etc. She has a mild level of down syndrome I am told.

only genuine answers please this is a serious question.

  1. I agree with the other posters in this question. It really depends on the child if she is potty trained or not. Check with her parents to find out.

  2. I agree with the other posters; check this with your Senco and the child's parents. An IEP should have been created, and a care plan should be in place. Ideally as you will be working closely with the child, you should have a meeting with the parents, child and your Senco prior to the child starting with you. This should give all parties the opportunity to discuss any issues, concerns or anxieties, and begin a really positive partnership.

    Good luck, and have fun

  3. It completely depends upon the student.  I would guess that she, if she is truely mild, will be okay at the toiliet but have difficulty with buttons, hosiery, etc. due to fine motor problems.  The special education teacher will know or know how to best find out.  They should also provide and sanitation products needed to protect you.  :)

  4. wow! everyone gave such wonderful answers! my son is 4 1/2 and will be going to 4k this fall in a regular classroom....he is yet not fully potty trained. as someone stated each child is different.  what will more than likely happen is that they will have an IEP meeting with the student, her parents, teacher, and therapists. during this time you will be able to ask your questions. talk to the special ed teacher and ask to be included in this meeting.

  5. The teacher is responsible for giving you the information you need to do your job.  The teacher will loo in the IEP or Evaluation and have discussed with previous staff and/or parent what her needs are.

You may need to do a lot - you may be there only for supervision to make sure that she is not bullied.  If you are unsure Ask the teacher it is her/his responsibility to give you what you need to do your job.

  6. my son is 4 and is no were near toilet trained yet  its nothing to do with age with down syndrome there are lots of factors like health . as for wiping her self  have you not spoke to her mum or dad yet these are the people that no there child best .....?  always talk to the parents they no best is the only way you will get to no

  7. I would ask her parents if there is any extra help she needs with things.

I have a cousin with down syndrome and by the age of  five he was doing most things himself except make his own bed.Hes 15 now and still doesn't do it.i think that's more to do with laziness than having downs.
