  2. with a 2:15 in the 800 for a 14 year old girl... ur gunna do great in cross country.

You can go there and use the Smart Coach to get a good training schedule if you want.

One thing that I don't think the smart coach covers is cross training. Once or twice a week I would do laps in a pool for about 15 minutes. That should help. I would throw in some biking if you want too.

This summer (i am 16 running in high school by the way...) I am starting off with some 3-4 mile runs in June. In July I'm wokring my way up to 5 mile runs... in late July alternating with 6 mile runs, 8 mile runs, and the occasional (once every 5 days or so...) 3 mile run. With some swimming once or twice a week. Come August, I will start my 10 mile runs (about 2-3 times a week) with a 6 mile run, a 4 mile run, and a 4 mile run and some swimming. I'm taking a day off every 10 days or so, and I'm alternating long distance and shorter distance days.... just mixing it up. Also, I would run on dirt/grass as much as you can to make it easier on your knees.

Also try working out your upper body once or twice a week. You need strength for pumping your arms in a race.

I don't do any track workouts over the summer beacause I just like to mainly work on my endurance and not work my leg muscles too hard. Then once cross country starts, that's when I start doing speed workouts. Just try not to over-work youself and get too tired before corss country.

Always run with someone else. They can help pace you, keep you from getting bored, and in case of an emergency get some help. Also try running at either night or morning in the summer so it's not too hot out. Stay hydrated. And that's about it.

  3. Well, keep up with running long distance, you will only get better. Also, listen to inspirational Rocky music, the songs found in the Rocky movies, to run with.

  4. Don't try to do track training every day, maximum of three times a week with cross training [gym, swim, bike ] in between, especially build up the strength of your leg muscles.

On the track after a good warm-up concentrate on speed bursts of 100-300 metres with easy jogging in between. The shorter the burst the faster you go.When you are fresh try the occasional longer burst over 600m. If you want to run 2mins 10 sec for 800m, you should try to run 600m in about 100 secs. For a 400m in 58 secs, you need to try to do a 300m time trial in 44 secs. Preferably both distances with another athlete of equal ability for company. Avoiding boredom and injury is most important.
