  1. I've played both positions. Personally, I prefer tight head because I have a weaker left ankle and with the tight head position I'm able to use more force on my outside leg to drive. When going into the scrum, I stagger my feet so my outside foot is slightly further back than my inside foot which supports the hooker. When I go into contact, I use my outside foot to "step into the scrum". With that, I can use my inner foot to hook the ball if the hooker misses it, use my inner foot to step into position if we drive over the ball, or just keep both feet in place for better balance. If you're just starting out, remember to keep your *** below your shoulders or else you'll be diving down and risk injury to your neck or back.

  2. Back straight, head up, look forward. legs apart and feet slightly turned out to the sides to get more studs in. Bind as tight as you can to the hooker. It's very important to work together with the other two members of your front row and with the rest of your pack, so you work as a team. It doesn't matter how good you are - if you're out of synch with the rest of your scrum you are a weakness.
