I am brainstorming a land trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Mexico. Can anyone supply a cost estimate?

I am estimating to take about three weeks. Travelling mostly by bus or other land travel systems available. I wish to take the most economical path. I estimate that most of my costs will be for hotels or hostels whichever is available. I also want to see the usual sites. Ideally I would like to spend under $2,000 (US). Can anyone with experinece or expertise help me out and let me know if this trip is possible considering the budget? Any helpful links would also be appreciated. Many Thanks!!

The trip is possible but the cost of gas will be very very high. And frankly, I wouldnt want to travel through Central America by land. I would do all South America and then fly to Mexico.
