  1. my advice for you is to get on a water polo team and they'll normally teach you there as for staying in shape polo coaches always love fast swimmers so i suggest getting on a swim team also and maybe hit the gym a few times a week if you have the time

  2. Joining a team as stated above is good advice.  If you are unable to do so or want some training prior to their season, there are certainly some things you can do on your own:

Swim Training:  Build up your endurance and speed.  Start with distance, but then add interval work and fartlick drills.   Do much of your sprint work with your head up and no goggels.

Practice the eggbeater with both hand out of the water.

Practice throwing with anyone you can.   Practice dry and wet passes - where you catch the ball dry or it lands in the water in front of you.  Practice throwing the ball to someone swimming away from you so that it lands in front of tham and they swim to it.   Practice swimmnig crawl stroke with the ball your self.

Get a book and familiarize yourself with the rules and strategies.

  3. yay! water polo is ahhhmazing! in general it is similar to soccer or basketball but in the water with only one hand. you tread and swim "heads-up" alot.

when i first started i felt the same as you. find some people that have played before and ask if they can show you some stuff. it is much easier in person.

you may want to buy or borrow a water polo ball to get used to it and improve your handling skills now.

watch some videos on youtube, those help forreal. to get an idea of a game, watch some or olympics although you will not play at that intensity.

water polo is a very tough sport... you definately need to know how to swim- not exactly long distances but you need the strenght and enduarnce to sprint and keep moving during a game. you will also need to practice which will be easier if you are in swimming shape. work on freestyle, some backstroke and in waterpolo you do freestyle with your head up so it uses a lil bit diffent muscles so start doing that. when you play or practice, you eggbeater which is very similar to a nonsymmetrical breaststrroke kick to tread. this is thighs and alot of your legs. you need to be able to do this for long periods of time so start this. when you throw or catch use your arms so strengthen those. waterpolo basically uses all muscle groups.... i reccomend work on your swimming and proabaly weight training. it is a hardcore sport and you will get pushed around so be prepared to be rough back and do take chances. don't be afraid. i hope you love this sport.... it's amaxing and so much fun to get into.

if you could find a club team or anything that has waterpolo now try that. maybe join a swimteam or swim on your own. lift and do core work and weight training. get in as best shape as you can now and the season and it will be much easier during season and you can focus more on skills rather than getting in shape because you already will be. it may be hard but so worht it! good luck!

in the sources are the sites i used to learn when i started out and they are all very helpful.

this is my favorite sport and i know you will enjoy it... so have fun!
