  1. Maybe you just simply do not have enough.  That was my problem.  I had to end up formula feeding.

  2. Yes you can mix breastmilk with formula, but it's a very different taste.  It might take a few tries before he accepts it.

  3. If you let your baby breastfeed even though you have pumped until there is no more milk coming out there is still plenty of milk in your b*****s.  A breast pump is not as efficient as a baby; and the less milk in your b*****s the faster they make milk.  b*****s are never empty.

If you take bottled milk with you in public and you are out for much longer than one normal nursing time then you are likely going to end up in the bathroom pumping so you don't leak everywhere.  Trust me being in a bathroom stall with a pump that goes "slurp, slurp, slurp" or "wheeze, wheeze, wheeze" is far more embarrassing than nursing in public.  Plus if you are out without another adult then its you and baby in the stall -and your hands are busy pumping so where do you put the baby.  As someone with problems making too much milk and easily distracted babies I have spent too much time pumping in bathrooms -its gross, its awkward, its embarrassing, and I would much rather be snuggling with my child or enjoying being out of the house.

Giving a breastfed baby formula changes the pH and flora of their digestive tract for up to two weeks.  During those two weeks many of the protective benefits of breastfeeding are reduced.  Even a few bottles are enough to cause sensitivity to formula ingredients (milk, soy, whatever).  Bottles in and of themselves can cause problems with breastfeeding and cause ear infections

Personally I hate nursing covers, firstly they draw attention to what you are doing and secondly I hate what they symbolize -that nursing is a shameful thing.  Many, many times people have come up to see the "sleeping" baby and don't notice that I am nursing until they are inches away if at all.  That being said I would rather a mom use a cover than not go out, not breastfeed, waste so much time and brain power on pumping, or use formula.

    Use a nursing shirt

Use a nursing cover (blanket, hooter hider, slurp 'n' burp, etc)

Nurse in the family room or nursing room available at most malls

    Nurse in a changing room

    Nurse in your car

Heck take a pup tent and nurse in that

But stop spending your time worrying about pumping, just get out and enjoy life and your baby.

  4. If your child is eating more then 8-12 times in a 24 hour period then you could be right that he is not getting enough from you to satisfy himself. How is his weight? If needs to eat more i would consult a lactation consultant to have them look to make sure that he is latching on properly. You can mix formula with breastmilk but sometimes the taste is not appealing to the infant. How many outings are you taking. Try to nurse him off one breast then pump the breast that he wasn't nursing from. If all fails it is ok to give a bottle of formula when going out in public. Or you can just nurse in public.

  5. you can feed the baby in public? I'm sure your supply is fine very few women don't have enough milk. I second the idea of pumping on the opposite breast feeding in public isn't nearly as bad as people think.

  6. stop pumping for awhile, and just let him nurse as often as he wants.

  7. I would stop pumping for a while. I scheduled my outings around feeding times. It's kind of a pain but I was determined to breast feed for as long as possible. My son has never had a bottle or formula and he is just about 9 months. I don't think that there is anything wrong with mixing breast milk with formula though.
