I have a 4 month old who i still breastfeed. I am not ready to give it up yet as I love the bonding and closeness. My biggest problem is i Love my coffee as well. I have tried to go "cold turkey" and i have hit day 3 and the headaches are unbearable so i have been taking panadene. I am sooo tempted to have just one coffee. Can someone tell me if i have 1 cup of coffee how much water should i have after it to keep my supply up. My nourishment went down and wasn't satisfying bub so to build up supply nourishment again i have been advised to give up coffee. Can one lousy coffee a day really harm the bub? Oh and i am talking about espresso not instant

  1. Oh, that's a tough one.  I gave up coffee while pregnant (8 months) and breast feeding (15 months), so I was without it for almost two years total.  I'm also a coffee/espresso lover, so I feel your pain!

On one hand, you want to keep your diet as pure and wholesome for your baby as possible.  On the other, you can't effectively care for your baby if you have headaches.  I say go ahead and have one coffee or espresso per day.  I've always heard that whether you're breast feeding or not, you should drink two cups (8 ounces each) of water per cup of caffeine.  So have just that one coffee, 16 ounces of water, and you and Baby should be fine.

  2. Well, coffees usually hit the brain. Caffein gets you really hyped up and it's not good for the brain. Though I don't think it's going to hurt the baby, I think it's best to avoid it. Try tea. They are rather tasty, even if you are obviously an American.

  3. I know it's not the same but try decaf.

It's about your only option other than no coffee at all.

  4. i am italian and i am brestfeeding my bub who is almost 2 yrs old. i have always had one espresso a day, in the morning or after lunch, as we usually do in italy and the bub has no problems. i stopped when i was pregnant just because i didn't like it.

  5. My doctor said that coffee will not harm the baby, or the breast milk. I did not give up coffee when I breast fed. In fact, the nurses offered it to me the day after I delivered! So, no, one cup of coffee is no where going to harm the baby...... he or she will be fine. ♥

  6. Caffeine does enter your bloodstream, and some portion of what you eat or drink appears in your breast milk. If you consume more than 400 mg of caffeine a day (about what you'd get in four mugs of coffee), it might affect your baby. That's why it's probably best to restrict your intake while breastfeeding.

Though one or two cups of coffee, tea, or cola isn't likely to affect either of you, more might make one or both of you irritable, jittery, agitated, and sleepless. If you want to have a cup or two of coffee or tea a day while breastfeeding, make a conscious effort to drink at least eight glasses of water every day as well (good advice whether or not you're taking in caffeine).

And if the caffeine seems to bother your baby, abstain for a bit until after you've weaned her to drink it again. If you decide you want to kick the caffeine habit, click here for tips.

  7. i love my coffee to and i was woried about the same thing as i also breastfeed my 8 month old.

I asked my maternal health nurse and she advised that i have the bare minimum coffe but to have one staight after a feed so the next time i feed the level of caffine in my system wouldn't be as high
