  1. vnyl liner gets a lot of holes in it due age and time  they can get hard and crack or get brittle i agree with other person get gunite if you can afford it less problems

  2. Any pool regardless of surface can and will have problems as they age.

Vinyl Liners will probably have the shortest lifespan before having to replace the liner.  Depending on conditions such as chemical upkeep and minimal wear and tear <in other words, Adults, and not a bunch of 10 year olds) you should expect 15 years out of a liner or even longer.  Vinyl Pools can be patched relatively easily if you can find the hole.  Small holes can often be difficult to find, so this may be expensive over time trying to find a tiny hole.  You may have to hire a Diver with an air tank to be able to scour the entire pool surface looking for a tiny hole.

Fiberglass-  More durable than Vinyl liners, but not durable that they cant be broken.  IF you crack a fiberglass shell, you are going to have to drain your pool water to patch the crack, and it probably wont look great having a fiberglass patch over the cracked area, because it will look newer and show prominently that there was a problem.

Gunite-  Gunite pools are a concrete pool that has a finihshed shell made out of plaster.  The most durable of pools, they wont tear, crack or break based on usage.  Pools can be replastered if they become dull, or get stained and the chemicals wont remove the stains <such as rust stains for example>.  Gunite pools will last many years before you might need a replastering.  An option to replastering your pool due to stains is to paint the bottom of your pool.  That will give you more years out of your existing plaster finish, but keep in mind that because its paint, Paint does chip, fade, and crack with use, and you cant use just any old paint, you have to use paint designed specifcally for pool finishes, and it needs to have a primer coat before you can paint it.

IF i were going to build a pool, and i could afford a pool, i would go with a gunite pool.  IF i couldnt afford gunite, i would go with a Vinyl Liner.  I am just not a big fan of Fiberglass pools.  I have worked on and serviced all 3 types of pools

  3. concrete, semipermanent just needs to rediamond coat every 10yrs fiberglass cracks expensive to repair.
