The aquarium is 24 inches long. I have heard that it will be ok for a young snake and should last about a year. Is this correct?

  1. yep it depends on how much he is fed, growth rates may differ....

but 20 gallon to start is a good choice.

  2. That is correct. In fact it may actually last longer. One of my ball pythons is over a year old and still fits quite comftorably. I have even seen full grown adults in 20 gallon tanks although they looked a bit cramped and the water bowl was rather small. It should last you from 1-2 years. Also you can provide at least 2 hide spots while it's a baby and once the BP matures you can remove one of the hides.

  3. Depending on if you have a male or female it could last forever for them.  You might need a bigger one for a female but most males will be happy in a tank that size their entire life.

It is actually a bit big for a baby - make sure you fill it up with hides and maybe crumpled up newspaper to make them more secure.  The more you fill it with (fake plants and what not) the happier your snake will be.

    Best of luck!

  4. I started with a 10 gallon reptile tank. now he is in a 20. he can strech out fully and he is able to more around. He is taken out daily about an hour a day andhe swims anddoes other things. i do not plan on buying something bigger.I been told if they are active outside their homes that a 20 gal would be enough. Long as it is a20 gallon LONG

Elvis/ my snake is 3 foot now.

  5. My last baby ball was a rescue, and lived quite happily in his 30 T (same bottom size as a 20 L) for 2 yr. before he got cramped and needed more floor space.

Though they sit like a lump on a log most of the day, they are quite active at night, and very good climbers.  They will make good use of the space you give them, and appreciate some limbs for climbing/exercise.  Make sure you have good locks on the top, though.  They'll test it nightly.

Be sure he has a ceramic crock for soaking, and a comfy hide.  I use Carefresh bedding for mine.

Your baby will do just fine in that space for a while.  2-3 yr., depending on his growth rate.

    Enjoy your new pet.

  6. A 20 gallon long should last it until is is about 2.5-3 feet. Once they get over 2 feet they become fairly inactive and don't need that much room.
