but i don't know how much it would cost all together. I'm planning on getting a floppy eared rabbit, which cost around $30. what i don't know is how much i should be willing to spend on an ok cage and all the trimmings. how much should i be taking out of my wallet when i go to the pet store?

p.s. please don't post the 'do you know how much responsibility is involved in buying a rabbit?' line. i know, I'm not a 3 year old. if i wasn't serious about this i wouldn't post a question. thanks.

  1. depends on what your going to feed them. my rabbit had the runs if i didnt buy the organic rabbit food which was 10-12 dollars ever two weeks.. certain hays they like, certain prices. is your rabbit spayed? this will cost a more than $75. and they should have it to reduce cancer. yes cancer. you might want to get pet insurance for your rabbit incase he/she gets sick. my rabbit needed his teeth grated down or else it wouldnt fit right in her jaw. im glad your aware of the responsibilty so im not gonna shake my finger and tell you what u want to do. but it can get pricey.

  2. probably about $50, if not less. i wouldnt go over $50. good luck on ur rabbit!

  3. congrats

rabbits are so cute and the sweetest thing ever

    i have a mini rex

and she cost me around $60

the cage i got was a starter kit and contained all the necessities(cage food, bedding, food dish ,treats and water bottle) for around $150.00

i also bought this cute little igloo that she could sleep and hide in for about $20.00

you might also want to invest in a harness and leash for when you take them outside because they can run really fast these also cost around $20.00

good luck with your rabbit they are very loving companions

    for food and other things

expect to spend around $30.00 a month

for food, hay , bedding and treats

i also don't recommend wood shavings as bedding as they can sometimes eat the bedding and become sick.

i find the boxo a bedding made from recycled boxes is a good brand and helps reduce odors   and it's safe and  cozy for your pet

anyways good luck and enjoy your rabbit

  4. If you can, get a rabbit form a shelter or rescue group. They are usually fixed and don't cost a lot. I payed $45 at a shelter for a fixed rabbit and have payed $300 to get one spayed.

For a cage, it is cheaper to build your own than to buy one form a pet store. The cage is made of wire shelving cube panels and is held together with zip ties and connectors. The floor is made of chloroplast. It is easy to build and can cost less than $60 if you get the panels on sale. http://www.guineapigcages.com has tons on info on how to build one and what you need. The minimum size you need a 2*3 panels and 2 high. You can build as big as you want or have room for. My rabbits like to have shelves and levels.

A cage from a pet store can cost $100 or more for less than 2*3 feet.

Rabbits need to have a good quality pellet, hay and water. Veggies can be introduced after 4 months. I like Oxbow pellets, but they can be expensive and hard to find. I spend about $20 every 6 weeks to feed 3 rabbits Oxbow Bunny Basics T. Rabbits should have a variety or grass hay like Timothy, Brome, and Orchard grass. Prices for hay can vary. I get it by the bale, so it is cheaper. A bag of hay for a store can be $10 or more. You need to have a bowl for pellets, get a ceramic one. I use a bowl for water, but bottles can work too. A large hay rack keeps the hay neat.

A litter box is a good idea. It makes cleaning the cages easier and keeps the cage cleaner. A large cat box works well. The litter should be recycled paper pellets or wood pellets. Clay or clumping cat litter is not suitable as it can cause blockages if eaten. A box costs about $8. Litter can vary for $4 for a 40lb bag and up.

If you choose to use wood shavings in the cage, don't use pine or cedar, these can have harmful chemicals that cause respiratory problems. If you have to use wood shavings, use aspen. I use blankets as bedding in the cage. A bag of aspen shaving is about $20, blankets about $10 each.

Rabbits need toys. These can be grassy mats or balls with bells. These can range in price form $1-$10.

Rabbits need to see a rabbit savvy vet. The price for a check up can be $30 and up. Emergency care or treatment of an illness can run hundreds or thousands of dollars.

I have set up a rabbit cage without visiting a pet store (except for food, and that is a small independent one). Discount and dollar stores can have things like bowls and some toys. I use CD racks for hay racks. Walmart has litter boxes. Hardware stores are great for wood pellets or stuff to make the cage. If you know where to shop, you can get the things you need cheap.

  5. Please adopt http://www.petfinder.com/

You can look over http://www.rabbit.org for proper care info first. The pet stores will try to sell you a bunch of bad items and things you don't need.

  6. Try going online to your local pet store and researching up what you are looking into buying for the rabbit.

Then, total up the trimmings, feed, etc. that you will have to buy regularly for a year and come up with your own estimate.

Just do your research online so you don't have to go to a store first.
