I am buying chiffon fabric as a gift how much should i get? how much lining?

I am buying some silk chiffon fabric as a gift for a 2nd year fashion design student how many yards should i get so she can make a dress or something nice and since its a sheer fabric how much lining should i get? do i even need lining? is there anything else i need?

5 yards of Chiffon and  4 yards of lining so she could make the dress long or short. There's nothing worse than running short on fabric. Matching thread  is always nice to have too. Great Idea ;)))

4 yards is a good amount. Chiffon will have to go over an actual garment fabric, so you could go with a nice matching satin.
