  1. I'm fairly certain only aboriginal an torres straight islanders get looked after in australia. Unfair really since they're the ones crying out for equal opportunity all the time! Have a chat to the people at centrelink (If you can get any sense out of them) They should be able to tell you if there's anything out there.

  2. Here is the link for the Higher Ed dept at Cherokee nation.  They may have scholarships you can apply for.  Pay close attention to the deadlines.  Also, you might consider attending Haskell College in Kansas.  Is free EVERYTHING to eligible American Indians.  Dorms, tuition, meals... I think you have to pay less than 150 for a fee for the entire year.

    Good luck.

  3. If you are enrolled in one of the tribes, you can receive:

Free direct health care services provided at any Indian Health Care facility throughout the United States.

    Free college and scholarships.

Vocational training scholarship programs, supportive services and/or assistance to pay for tuition fees, and books while attending.

Tuition assistance grants for a variety of occupational or technical trades, Associate of Applied Arts, or Applied Science degrees. Includes on the job training in occupational trades.

Business loan guaranties from the Bureau of Indian Affairs up to $500,000.

Emergency loans for property taxes, foreclosure or eviction notices on homes, or cut off notices for utilities.

Employee loans for operating expenses and subsistence.

Mortgage Assistance Program - up to $10,000 for down payment and closing cost towards the purchase or construction of a home. No payback is required if the family stays in the home for at least 10 years.

Rather than guessing which tribe you should apply to, or whether you are eligible or not, go to cherokeeregistry.com. It has all the requirements, eligibility, forms and information for every Cherokee tribe. It will save you a lot of headaches, expecially if you don't have all the information needed about your grandmother.

  4. Your heritage will not qualify you for anything but your citizenship can.  Government grants for American Indians are reserved for enrolled tribal members/citizens only.  In order for you to qualify for any of these funding opportunities, you must be enrolled in one of the 3 federally-recognized Cherokee tribes: Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Eastern Band Cherokee, or United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee.  If you are enrolled, contact your tribe of enrollment for more information.  If you are not enrolled then you will need to become enrolled before you qualify for any of the funding opportunities you seek.
