You'll spend more than $50 a day on food, unless you only eat  hot dogs from the street vendor.  NYC is very expensive, but worth every penny.

But, oh, that price?  Almost impossible.  You'll have to try a YMCA or hostel or go to a bad part of the city.  Some cheap are on that site but I don't know for that price or not.

Edit:  Just checked on the link I provided and found 6 under 50 dollars.  You may have to use shared bathrooms, though.  Check it out.

You could try sleeping in the park, you can't stay in NYC for that kind of money anymore, I did a little research and this is the best I could find:

You are funny!  You cannot stay in the center of any big city for $50/day.  You will have to be out in the burbs or outside the city completely.
