I am concerned about pickpocketers in London, Paris, and Barcelona? Should I buy a switchblade to slice them?

Slicing them as in taking a random swing when noticing them.

  1. The point with pickpockets is that they do most of their work unnoticed.

By the time you are aware that something has been stolen, they are already away, most often out of sight.

If you use a knife to attack anyone, you are in the wrong, even when it is a pickpocket with his hand in your pocket.

But most likely the people you would hurt would be innocent people who just accidentally bump into you when passing.

You are doubly in the wrong then.

Indeed, better take care of your things, put the important things, like your passport and your bank card, in a pouch under your clothes, the belt shaped ones fitting inside the top of your jeans are the best.

  2. No matter where you are in the world that could be trouble.Unless you are fluent in the language, YOU could be arrested for assault. It's best not to keep wallets etc. within easy reach. Use a belt caddy (f***y-pack) around your waist, held in front. Don't carry what you can't afford to lose unless necessary. Avoid tight crowds because that's where they work best.

    Have a safe trip!

  3. For a start as mentioned - by the time you have been pickpocketed and found out (usually much later) then it won't help you anyway

Secondly in the majority of Europe (all?) carrying a knive is illegal, so actually you have more chance of being picked up by the police by doing so than a pickpocketer

Lastly, if you are flying in, then you will not get it through the airport scanner anyway carrying it with you.

The best advice is to be proactive and take measures to avoid people pickpocketing you in the first place rather than being reactive and trying to cause personal injury as revenge afterwards

  4. No, just make your things difficult to steal.  Wear money belts, backpack with locked zippers, bag with steel-reinforced straps, etc.

  5. No, just make it more difficult to steal from you.
