Team In Training is supposed to be for all fitness levels. But I am concerned about putting extra stress on my joints due to the excess weight. I am not sure if it is better to train as a runner or a cyclist, since both will undoubtably address my weight issues.

  1. Back in the beginning of June I rode my bike12 miles for a charity function.  There were also 30, 50, and 100 mile rides for those with more experience.  I was amazed at the fact that some very big people were able to complete the really long rides, no problem.  I think it's much easier for most people to bike than run; it's easier on the joints, and less jarring for the whole body.  You get a great aerobic workout and build some serious muscle in your legs too, which ramps up your metabolism and helps you burn fat.

For now, I'd stick to cycling, and then once you get in the kind of shape you want to be in, train for running too.

  2. Cycling is easier for heavier people as you can put your weight on the seat therefore taking the pressure off your joints. Whereas running involves carrying all of your weight. Also you can fit cycling into your daily routine easier (such as riding to work), so you will be exercising more, increasing your fitness levels and reducing your weight. Plus you wont be using a car so you'l be helping the environment
