  1. Hi, I live in Africa, South Africa to be exact and I have two Economics degrees so i think i can help. I did an undergraduate business degree majoring in Economics, as well as post grad degree in Economics. And there are so many opportunities! i finished university last year and got a job immediately as an economist at the South African National Treasury (very prestigious, its equivalent to the Ministry of Finance). Besides where I work there are private banks, investment banks, research companies, the Reserve Bank (ie. the Central Bank), Statistics firms, etc all looking for new economists all the time!! ok salary wise, it depends where you wanna work- public or private sector. Private sector pays really well but public sector is not too shabby either. right now i earn about R15 000rands a month (roughly 8 rands= 1 american dollar), but for a new graduate this is not too bad, and it is set to increase quickly as I gain experience. National Treasury employees are highly sought after by private banks and the like, so soon i'll  be making lots!

  2. There aren't many jobs for people with straight economics degrees anymore, most jobs require more specialized skills and training. With a masters in the public sector you can expect to make ~50k$ starting. If your serious about economics get a b.s. in applied mathematics (statistics), then get a masters in economics, and finally a ph.d. in economics. Way better pay with a ph.d. (100k+$ starting).

  3. If you are going to Harvard, your future is limited. You won't end up on Wall Street, but main street as a High School teacher.

Unless you have connections or need Economics as an edge in a business idea, chances are you won't enjoy where you end up.

Think about it... Economics is the study of trade. Its a profession with a limited number of employers looking for that skill set. Don't count on being rich. Only the connected get the money.
