I have heard that these engines are cheaply made, and are one of the culprits for Bayliners being an unpopular choice. Does anybody have any experience with 1989-1990 Force 125 outboards? This one is "said" to have fairly low hours. It was gone over by the marina mechanic who says it's in good condition.

  1. an old force is an old chrysler. i have worked in a marina and a force outboard were with bayliner that even came with a trailor and sold cheap beginner level boats. in my opinion the engine and boat together or separately are junk

  2. The old "Chrysler Marine", If you see "Force" or "Bayliner", walk away from the deal fast, it's aimed at first time boat buyers that don't know anything but, "NOW YOU KNOW" !

  3. I was considering the same deal.  Here's the responses to my question -

Force outboards - Would you buy one for use for a few years?

I'm thinking of getting an entry level Bayliner or something similar with an open bow for water skiing and fishing. The problem is most of the boats I am looking at seem to come with Force outboards in the 90 to 120 range.

I know Force is no longer in business, and parts are hard to come by, but for me, this isn't a keep forever type of purchase. I plan on using the boat/motor for a couple of years to see if I will use it as much as I think I will. If I do, then I plan on selling and moving up to a better boat. My problem is I don't want to get stuck with a motor that will cost me a boatload (sorry I couldn't resist!) of money to fix during this period when I'm trying to decide if I want to get a new boat or not. I would love to find a Merc, but as I'm sure you all know they are pricey and don't come with the boats I'm looking at. If you do think it is a good idea to go with a Force outboard, are any things in particular I should look for when I'm looking at potential boats?

  4. You have heard right - Force outboards are a very poor motor.  (Kind of the hyundai or kia of the boating world).  It would be wise to run run run as fast as you can, or if you are purchasing from a marina that has other boats, ask about swapping the motor for a Merc, Honda, or Yamaha.

  5. Bayliner force is what we call "entry level boats" which is a nice way of saying "cheap piece of c**p". That engine is difficult to troubleshoot because they idle on 2 cylinders. They have terrible corrosion resistence.  I would not even consider owning one, but you see them out there running so they can't be TOO bad. Parts ARE available thru a Mercury dealer as they are really a Mercury product after they bought them from Chrysler. That boat better be a GREAT DEAL!!
