Question:

I am currently designing my bedroom and need ideas.?

I have a very tight budget, so DIY projects are definitely welcome. I have three light yellow walls and one light blue wall. It is a small bedroom-my furniture consists of a king sized bed, a dresser and a bookshelf (both of those are tall rather than wide-they take up less room that way).

I'm looking mainly for ideas of wall art. I don't have a headboard and was thinking of making one myself, but I don't know, since my room is already small it might make it appear smaller.

thanks!

  1. One cool idea I tried (with success!) was covering foam panels with fabric.  You can make them as large or small as you like, and use any color or texture fabric.

The panels can even be used as a bulletin board with push pins if you like.

Since the panels are foam, they're light enough to easily mount on your wall with double-stick tape, or small nails.  You could even make a headboard (mounted on the wall) using the same technique:

Go to Home Depot (or your local home improvement store) and ask for "pink rigid foam insulation" in the building materials department.  The panels come in 4'x8' sizes, but are easily cut with a razor knife (ask to use one at the store, so it'll fit in your vehicle!).

Fabric can be purchased by-the-yard at your local fabric store.

I made a checkerboard pattern of 2'x2' panels; you can get eight from one 4'x8' sheet.

Cut the panels to size, and use spray adhesive (home depot) and/or a stapler to fold the fabric around the foam, and secure to the back.  Easy!

  2. you can get an 8' sheet of plywood, cover it with quilt batting on one side, stapled to the plywood on the other, and a few yards of a fabric that goes well with your other decor to cover the batting, again stapled to the other side.  Lay longways on the floor behind the head of your bed for an instant, cheap headboard.

Another cheap idea for decor is to get a large canvas (oil painting type) and some colors you like, splash across the canvas and let dry.  Instant art.  Pretty cheap.

Make the most of the room you have with underbed storage bins.
