  1. Wood is one of the items you MUST declare since it is possible they contain living organisms which can harm our wildlife if they are accidentally introduced into the country

You should be given a card to fill out before you enter Australia. You MUST fill it out carefully, declaring the items. If not, there are bins for you to dispose of the items BEFORE you enter. If you fail to do any of this, you can risk up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up at least $60,000 and your items will of course be destroyed.

However, some items may be treated prior to taking them in but will attract fees.

Check out: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/travel/enter... for more information.

  2. Unless the wood in infested with critters then you would be allowed t bring it in, you may however need to pay for it to be quarantined, where they can spray it or freeze it to stop and disease or bugs entering Australia.

When you're on the plane to Australia they will hand out Declaration Cards, you simply need to answer the questions honestly and tick Yes for wood products.

Upon arrival at the airport line up in the Something to declare line, try and pack the souvenirs so they can be accessed easily, as you will need to present them at Quarantine. They will then assess if they need treatment. If the do, you will need to leave the products pay a small fee, and pick the souvenirs back up at a later date.

  3. My husband bought wooden souveniers back from Serbia a couple of years ago.  He just ticked 'yes' to wooden items on the entry card, quarantine had a quick look at the items and said they were OK to bring in.

There shouldn't be anything to worry about.  Just remember that you need to mark it on the card and, when asked, show them.

  4. It totally depends on the wood. Most treated words are OK and most raw woods will probably be an issue. Regardless, they will need to be declared and inspected by the customs at the airport. Worst case scenario - they will advise the timber needs to be treated which they will arrange and charge you for

  5. Hi!

You'll need to declare all wooden/plant items on your Customs arrival card when you come back to Australia. Your bags will be x-rayed.

The Customs officer will ask to see the wooden souvenir. The country it comes from is less important than what it is and what it looks like. I've brought sealed wood snowshoes and wooden paperweights back from Canada with no problems, but have had a hollow, carved wooden ornament confiscated. If it could have something living inside, you'll have less luck.

If the item's valuable, you can often have it treated by Customs for a fee, to destroy any living things which might be inside.
