today i talked to a couple of preschoolers about what grows . i got answers like people plants and animals. but not vegatables or fruit . i was going to do a chart and bring some pictures of thing s that grow and things that do not grow and have the children put them in a category . should i do that or should i talk to the children about vegetable and friuit and how they grow ,or should i talk to the kids about what you need to grow , or should i put up a chart and ask the kids put the things that you need to grow like water ,food , plant food etc and ask the kids to put them in a category and on the other side have something like rocks and have that side as things you do not need to grow.

  1. Why not combine the two?  Have a chart that you put things that grow on one side and things that do not on the other.  When the child puts one up on say "what would help that grow?".

  2. Hello

I am an ECE and my class is doing a thing that we go into the toddler room ( will work for preschool children as well) twice a week and we are teaching them about plants we have lots of diffrent activity's like.....

Painting with jam and talking about diffrent fruits and also we had a math activity which we put a bunch of cut out picture of fruit onto plants and asked the children if they could get us 5 blue berries

Also we took the on a tour of the green house outside which they absolutely loved.

we have sang songs about things that grow

we put flowers onto a big white sheet of paper and let then paint with pudding and we crunched up graham cracker and told the children it was dirt they loved it .

we have done a puppet show and talked about how things grow and how you can grow things

We have actually got the children to plant things and they watch them grow and take care of them..

There are lots of things you can do you just need to use you imagination.

  3. You really have thought about this ...GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! Make this yours!!  I would say that the chart thing could be a bit much to sit there and listen for too long.  Don't be scared to actually bring in things that are growing and let them touch them and look at them. Be creative and think of what is personal/exciting to you then actually bring those items into the class.  I think a planting activity would be amazing. Have some items that cant grow, and some that can, and a bunch of pots and soil with some tools .......this is problem solving, cause/effect, small motor, sensory, communtiy, physical environment ownership, cognitive.....You could do this outside( actually on the grounds) but run a risk of others destroying it. I suggest you plant inside.(small cups etc)....do you have a large water-play or manipulative table with a ledge?  Use this table to plant stuff together....make this child centered groups instead of one at a time so they can socialize and problem solve..... a chart has limited attention time so maybe have a chart after the activity where they will participate based on REAL experience......good luck to you,,,,,it sounds like you are motivated and thats incredible!!!!

*when you do this activity think of the age you are working with....have the tools be something they can manipulate on their own without much help.....let them pour the water themselves....have on hand some things for clean up and state from the beginning that this is what is happening when everything is planted....its a group thing!!!!! "The potting soil stays on the table please!!!" would be a line to say not because of mess (get over it) but because this could be the weapon of choice when frustrated instead of using words.

    YOU CAN DO IT!!!!
