The movie "Woodstock" is a good source for the music, a look at young peoples (in the 60s) views on s*x and the clothing styles (which I guess is a type of art) of the Hippie culture. It's probably for rent on DVD. Some of the political songs are kinda dated.

Any book about the Beatles will give you lots of info. Watch the movie "Woodstock" and the movie of the musical "Hair!"

In fiction read "The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test." This is completely hilarious. Listen to the music of the period. Jefferson Airplane sang many songs that were deeply in tune with hippie attitudes. Donovan also recorded some great songs like "Sunshine Superman" and "Season of the Witch" and "Epistle to Dippy." "Wear Your Love like Heaven" was another masterpiece.

As for the art, check out Peter Max and the cover of "Are You Experienced" (the album by Jimi Hendrix). For that matter the recent movie "Across the Universe" is full of the contemporary art scene in New York City.
