  1. The biggest misunderstanding is probably that this kind of clothing is typical German, even though it's only local to Bavaria and parts of Austria. And as has already been stated, even in Bavaria it's usually only worn a) on Oktoberfest (where everybody's drunk anyway) and b) in tourist places (in order to get the stereotype right). Moreover, anybody who wears the "Krachlederne" outside Bavaria will be regarded as a dumb idiot from the woods.

  2. Here is the low down - same like kilts in Scotland or traditional clothes in many other countries, Jeans or more fashionable garb have taken over for Lederhosen in the last 50 years. I wore as a boy the same pair of lederhosen all year around, with knee high socks (Struempfe) from age 5 to 12. I still have them, they are indestructible. Today, other then in rural areas, or for festivities, nobody wears them anymore.

My knees where always bloody, but my mother saved a lot of money on pants (and no, Germans don't live from Sauerkraut and Schnitzel). Good luck.

  3. Yes, especially during Oktoberfest time.

So far, it was the older generation who wore the traditional bavarian outfits (Lederhosen for men and Dirndl for women). Especially out in the country. You don't see many people wear them i the city (i.e. Munich) unless you go to a triditional bavarian pub, you might see some there, but again, only the older generation.

Today, almost everyone has Lederhosen or a Dirndl hanging in their closet, because ever since a few years ago, even the younger crowd started wearing them during the Oktoberfest. But only during that time.

So yes....people in Germany still wear Lederhosen!

  4. As already said Lederhosen and Dirndl are worn at certain events in Bavaria only. You usually won't see them elsewhere. Some people in tourist places wear it for the American and Japanese tourists (well, also for all other tourists but those mentioned are the "biggest crowd"). Sometimes you also can see them worn in Austria close to the border to Germany.

It's about the same with stetson hats. Many Germans think that all Americans wear these cowboy hats and you actually only see them in Texas (or maybe somewhere else on a ranch or so)

  5. yes! lederhosen is the traditional garb of germany during festivals and such people will wear lederhosen (the men garb) and women will wear the traditional dresses.

  6. When I was there, I only saw them for festivals and the odd restaurant. But hey, what do I know about all of Germany.

  7. Lederhosen are the traditional outfit in Bavaria, which is a state in S Germany - where BMW is from. People wear them to impress tourists ..

  8. u will never find lederhosen in north germany..

    lederhosen are south germany

  9. When I visited the Oktoberfest a saw a few Bavarians wearing Lederhosen...but I saw much more tourists wearing them!;-) Bavarians usually just wear their Lederhosen (if they have some) on special events...but not in daily life...
