  1. click the link below and read an interesting story-- what you might run into trying to star a restaurant in Mexico.

  2. My only experience was a hot check and NO PAY.

  3. I´m a Mexican  living and working in Mexico, and due to the nature of my business I can give you some references that you can use.

1.- Mexico in general is less formal than Americans when it comes around business appoinments.

2.- Punctuality is a vague issue, a lot of us Mexicans don´t take it so seriuosly. However, more and more people now are demanding punctuality in business meetings, so is no longer a generality.

3.- Mexicans use titles in their business cards, and if you like to be formal with them you have to adress them like so.

For example if you have a college degree in Engineering and your name is Aldo Rascon your business card and letters should be adress like

Dear Eng. Rascón,  instead of Mr. Rascon

And in business meetings often we don´t even pronounce their name, just refer to them by the title like:

Engineer, do you want more coffee?

4.- Another thing is how formal is the way that businees letters are writen in Mexico; is too formal, like you were reading a formal letter in english from the 19 th century but only in the greeting part and the finishing.

5.- if you try to make a business appoinment over lunch or dinner, be aware that we mexicans take that time to mingle with you, so it can go forever and there will be drinking, lot of conversation about everything..spending the hole evening, and it will be like having a "party meeting" like it was your birthday with some friends....business is better made at an office, not lunch or dinner..

6.- for the same reason business partners needs to be friends first, so those lunch appoinments basicaly are use for it. (though is not real frienship)

Never decline a lunch meeting,  you most go to at least one of this with your future mexican business partner...

If you don´t Mexicans will take that as an arrogant display of conduct, and most probably affect  in the resolution to make business with you.

Now also Mexico is a large country so things are deal different depending the region.

Big Cities like Mexico city, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, suits and tie is a most, people is more formal and they have a hectic type of life, but never in the way that New yorkers do.

Southern big cities like Merida, Villa hermosa, and  Veracruz or Acapulco, don´t try ever to ware a suit; ware a formal shirt long sleeve call "GUAYABERA",  that is use also in central america and the Caribean.

They also have a pretty slow type of life and in a lot of places there still the old custom of "siesta" and everything closes for two hours after 2 pm...

In places like Merida due to the heat (110 degrees some times) people start the day very early like 6 am or 7 am, they close for "siesta" time due to the heat, and after 4 or 5 pm the heat is coming down and people work until 8pm.

North Mexico is different, people work long hours, they dress very informal some times and they have this "country cowboy way of life" people tend to be more direct when you  are looking for an answer and they loves their boots and cowboy hats they don´t like so much to show around their money, like southerners and people from Mexico city do.

I can go on and on but i´ll think this is long enough already so good luck.
